Gravel was smoothed over the surface of the basement floors. Pipes protrude where drains will be. Jeff told me that a trench was carved in the gravel and a vented pipe was laid to collect any radon emitted from the soil. Radon would be vented outside so that it doesn't seep into the interior space. He said then a plastic sheet was spread over the gravel before they poured the concrete floors.
New Years Eve and Day were on weekends so worker were given weekdays off anyway.
Finding a break in the insistent snow storms, they found a day to pour and smooth concrete for the floors of the basements and the garage floors. (December 27)
Almost immediately, a heavy snow fell. Luckily, they were prepared with concrete blankets to protect them while the concrete cured. (December 28)
Between holidays and snow days, we see slow progress on the building. We are trying to be patient . . .
Jeff says framing should start soon. The lumber was dropped off at the site yesterday (January 5) but we are expecting 1-2 feet of snow this weekend. Feeling protective of my new house, I texted Jeff asking if I should go cover the lumber with a tarp.
We have been shoveling snow several times a day lately; some of the storms have left thick, heavy layers. I don't know how they shovel snow out of a basement with no lower level access or stairs yet!
