The Castle Valley Pageant and Camping in Emery County

On August 7th, we headed to Emery County to see the Castle Valley Pageant, which is between Castledale and Huntington. We chose a campsite called Forks of Huntington Canyon and set up our tent before grabbing Subway sandwiches in Huntington and heading to the pageant grounds.

The pageant features interesting displays of pioneer life and entertainment before the show begins.

L. especially liked the homemade ice cream, rope samples, and honey butter. The ride on the horse and wagon was short but fun. She didn't think much of the mountain man who threatened, with a smile, to scalp her.

Anyone who has experienced the Castle Valley Pageant will tell you that the highlight of the show is the mud dance. We agree.

After the show, we made our way back to our campsite and settled down for a cold summer night. Breakfast was a treat-- pancakes, bacon, and orange juice.

It was good we ate heartily because a leisurely walk on the nearby trail turned into a 6 mile hike – beautiful but tiring.

After the hike we packed up and headed for home. We noticed that the mountains to the south of us were watched over by a sphinx-like rock formation.

We also passed by the Huntington mine opening about a mile from our campsite where 6 miners were trapped in a cave-in two days before. The rescue efforts were highly covered by media.

We were pleased to get home and shower in the afternoon.
