We started up stream for a short excursion before turning toward the lake – Mom in front, L in the middle and Dad behind.
It took a while to establish paddling rules and navigational signals but we soon were underway.
We spotted fish, ducks, geese, and along the banks, squirrels.
The scenery changed as we approached the lake. Reedy marshes created a wetlands environment that was home to many water fowl. Without the willows to break the wind, the water became choppier.
Fearing a capsize of the canoe, we turned back up the lazy river.
We decided it was also time for a new navigator and put L in front. When we returned to our launching area, L made her way to the bank, soaking only one foot and a knee. Mom stepped out without incident.
Then Dad asked Mom to steady the canoe while he made his exit. Thinking that the rocks would brace the canoe, she pulled the front tip up. This action turned poor Dad out into the drink. It appeared to him and L that Mom had dumped him out with resolve. She claimed this was not the case. L then waded out to retrieve the floating paddle.
Once the canoe was loaded back on the truck and Dad had wrung out his clothing, we decided to take the picnic lunch back home.
In spite of the wetting, we agreed that this outing was a lot of fun and worth repeating.
